Snack Helper Week of May 23rd: No Snack Helper Needed – Thanks!

This week in Grammar 2:

Spelling: This week we will be completing rule pages and discussing these rules of the English language. We will also be doing some diagnostic testing.

Math: This week we finish a unit on scaled picture graphs. We will be doing some review work and continue to practice math facts addition and subtraction to 20.

We will continue to stress the importance of the addition and subtraction facts to 20 as well. Please practice math facts with your child each night. This is VERY important for their success in math this year.

Reading: During Reading class this week Mrs. Holmes’ class will finish “The Mouse and the Motorcycle”, and Mrs. Wiethorn’s class will finish “The Littles.”

Grammar/Writing: We will review this week all the parts of speech we have learned thus far – nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, interjections, and prepositions.

Bible: In Bible this week, we will continue reading in Joshua.

History: This week, Grammar 2 will enjoy looking at and reading our history notebooks compiled from the year.

Science: This week we continue our last unit of study- the seashore habitat. We will enjoy a couple of activities related to this final unit.

Water Bottles: Students will be allowed to keep water bottles in their cubbies. Please send a water bottle daily so that we do not need to make unnecessary trips to the water fountain.

Take Home Folders: Each day your child should bring home a green take home folder that we use to communicate. Please check it daily for notes from me and school notices, and use it to send notes to me. Anything needing a parent signature will be clearly marked/stamped with “Parent Signature Requested.”

Assignment Notebook: This notebook will also come home each day as a record of all homework due dates, and test dates. Check this daily and initial next to completed work.

Reading: Each night 2nd Graders are expected to read for 20 minutes. In this second part of our school year, we expect students to read independently. This can be reading aloud to the parent or older sibling, or reading silently to themselves. If your child is reading silently to themselves, a periodic “check-up” on comprehension is recommended. We will be helping your child choose a book for independent reading, which can be used for this reading requirement. Though we will write the titles in the reading log, you need not log minutes read.

Birthdays: You are welcome to bring in a treat for students to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please let us know ahead of time.

For the Week of May 23-26, 2011

**Thank you for joining us on Friday! We had so much fun presenting our class plays. We couldn’t have accomplished so much without each of you!

Reminders:

May 24—Closing Ceremonies and Circling of the Green (9:00 am)—Children should wear concert dress to school on Tuesday. During this ceremony, the Kindergarteners will be placed into their houses.

May 26—Last Day of School (Early Release at 12:00 pm)—We will be having our End of Year class party in the morning. Please join us if you can!

*Please check to see if you have any library books or readers at home and return them by Thursday.

Spelling: We will continue to practice phonograms daily, both orally and written. We will continue to review the spelling rules we have learned throughout the year. We will work with the individual sounds of words and with syllables.

Grammar/Literature: In grammar, we will be reviewing the sentence structure of declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences. We will be reviewing nouns as persons, places, things, and ideas, and also as proper and common. In literature, we will be discussing narrative writing, informative writing, and informative-narrative writing, and comparing these types of literature. This week we will be reviewing the five mental actions (checking for understanding, making connections, predicting, reformatting, and mentally summarizing) and identifying the attributes of quality literature in selections from the library.

Unit Study: This week we will conclude our discussion of the Great Barrier Reef. We will be learning about the different types of life in and around the reef. This week we will focus on the sea horse. We will continue working on our 3-D replica of the reef. This week we will be making water colored sea horses and working on any projects that have not yet been completed.

Math: In math, we will continue Chapter 12: Numbers to 100. We will work with counting to one hundred by ones, using a hundreds chart, and identifying patterns on the hundreds chart. We will be skip counting by fives, tens and twos, and discussing even and odd numbers. We will further these learning objectives through the use of manipulatives and hands-on activities.

Nature Study: This week, we will learn about spiders. We will learn that spiders are not insects. We will discuss that spiders are arachnids, come from the phylum arthropoda, and have eight legs. We will post a photograph of a spider on our nature wall under a new column. We will also be drawing a spider in our nature notebook.

Bible: This week, we will be reading the story of “Jonah and the Big Fish.” Please read this story at home with your child, and have them narrate the story back to you.

Show and Tell: We will not be having show and tell this week.

Have a wonderful week!

If you have any questions, please contact us at cmaeyaert@liveoakclassical.com or scox@liveoakclassical.com.

As I reflect on the year, I think of the variety of music we sang, the activities we did for reinforcing music theory, and the composers we studied. Students, you bring the music to life. Thank you for a splendid, music-filled year at Live Oak. Blessings to you as you complete this school year and begin your summer vacation. I look forward to more music next school year.
