Week of May 24th-28th

This week in the Wonderful World of Kindergarten

We’ve made it to the last week of school!  Can you believe how time has flown??  This week will be very eventful and exciting.  On Tuesday, please join us for Closing Ceremonies at 9:10 in the Sanctuary.  Tuesday afternoon, we will have the second round of our Academic Decathlon.  So far, both classes are tied!  On Thursday, we will be having our end of the year party, at 9:00.  Please join us!

Spelling/Grammar/Language:  This week, we will continue to review the 70 phonograms, verbally and written.  We will identify rhyming and non-rhyming words and review the pronunciation, spelling, and markings of the words we have learned thus far.  We will practice individual speech sounds and work on correct directionality for writing letters as we continue working on writing the phonograms we have learned.  We will write words in our spelling notebooks and we will practice these words throughout the week and review them on Friday.  Our spelling words for this week will include:  well, about, men, man, for, ran, run, was, that, and his.  We will continue working on proper nouns and identifying the differences between common and proper nouns.  We will place special focus this week with places, and discussing the city and state in which we live.   We will create oral sentences and pictures to identify common and proper nouns.  We will continue discussing informative, narrative, and informative-narrative literature.  We will discuss that informative-narrative literature contains many facts and will identify examples of informative-narrative literature that we read throughout the week.  We will also be making connections between our prior knowledge and what is stated in the books we read.  We will talk about checking understanding, making connections, and predicting.  We will identify the author’s purpose, type of writing, and the elements of the text, including the sequence of events.  Our reading selections this week will include Little Bear, The Three Little Kittens, Ten Apples Up on Top, Oh The Places You’ll Go, and other selections we have enjoyed throughout the year. We will also be reading aloud as a class.  I will be sending home small readers for your child to practice reading.

Unit Study:  We have completed our journey around the globe!  For the remainder of the year, we will be reviewing.  We will review even the places we visited at the beginning of the year, including our own community of Waco.  On Tuesday, we will be having our second round of the LOCS Academic Decathlon.  One of our areas of questioning will come from our Unit Study travels.
