Artist of the quarter:  Marc Chagall

The dignity of the artist lies in his duty of keeping awake the sense of wonder in the world. In this long vigil he often has to vary his methods of stimulation; but in this long vigil he is also himself striving against a continual tendency to sleep.”  –Marc Chagall

Mrs. Brummeler, Grammar 5 Literature/Composition and Bible

Posted by Brummeler Alicia

Welcome back from Spring Break!  The fourth quarter is here!  Here’s what is happening the week of Mar. 15th-19th:  It is play week!  Hopefully the students have looked over their lines a couple of times this past week.  The students will perform their play on Wed morning for the student body, and then again Friday morning for Grandparent’s Day.  The students need to bring their costumes to school on Monday, the 15th so I can make sure everyone has a costume.  Costumes will come home on Monday so the students can come to school dressed in their costume for Wednesday’s performance.  If you have any props that we can  use for the play, please also send those with your child on Monday.

Bible:  We will begin a new Bible lesson this week over Lazarus raised from the dead.

Literature:  I will be prepping the students about A Midsummer Night’s Dream  which the students will watch on Thursday as part of the Logic School performance.  Any spare moments will be spent preparing for our class play.

***The students had a final quiz on decimals Thursday before Spring Break.  These graded quizzes should come home in the Monday Envelope.  They are to be corrected (if the score is below 90), signed by parents and returned by Wednesday.

Monday We’ll review previous units.  Homework: Textbook Review A #11, 21-24

Tuesday We’ll spend one more day on reviewing previous material.  Homework: Textbook Review A #12-20 (if not finished in class)

Wednesday  Quiz corrections along with parent signatures are due today. The students will be reacquainted with percentages and practice expressing fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 as percentages.  Homework: Exercise 15

Thursday Today we’ll practice converting decimals to percentages and visa versa.  Homework: Ex 16

Friday Expressing percentages as fractions in their simplest forms is the objective of the day.

If you have ever wanted a model drawing demonstration, you might enjoy the video in the link below.  The teacher, Sandy Chen, is a Singapore Math trainer who worked with our teachers briefly last year.  Taken from a G4 level curriculum, this lesson is a bit slow moving, and in our classes, we do have modifications (like using equations with varibles and pointing out the algebra connections), but it is a thorough demonstration of the model drawing process:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsRUU6c6ijE&feature=related

7 Steps to Model Drawing : 1)Read the problem; 2)Determine the variables “who” and “what”; 3)Draw a unit bar(s) ; 4)Re-read the problem adjusting the bar(s) as you finish each sentence;5) Place the question mark; 6)Solve; 7)Write a complete sentence

MARCH IN GRAMMAR OF MUSIC CLASSES

Here are some highlights of our planned studies for the month of March:

  • Our composers in focus this month are Frederic Chopin of Poland and Claude Debussy of France. We are focusing on some of their beautiful piano pieces.  We will hear Chopin’s “Minute Waltz”, his “Raindrop Prelude”, and several of his preludes, mazurkas, and nocturnes.   We will enjoy Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk”, and “Arabesque 1″.
  • Our folk songs this month will have a nautical theme – “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”, “Cockles and Muscles”, “Blow the Man Down”, and other songs of the sea.  How fitting after our recent “Pirates” musical!
  • News by Grade Level:  All students in K through 6 will share music and recitations at designated moments throughout the Grandparents Day on Friday, March 19.  K-garten will listen to “Carnival of the Animals” over the weeks ahead.  Grammar 1 will be learning “Eerie Canal” to tie in with their history studies and will be listening to “Peter and the Wolf”.  Grammar 2 will take time in the weeks ahead to learn about Verdi’s opera set in Egypt, “Aida”.  G3 will continue to learn about medieval and renaissance music and will continue recorder studies.  G4 and G5 will resume recorder studies and will work on music for their Texas and frontier themed plays for Grandparents Day.

Week of March 1

Welcome Grammar 5 students!

Bible:

As we continue our chronological study of the gospels, we continue to look at the ministry of Christ. Quiz is on Thursday over the death of John the Baptist.

Spelling/Grammar:

This week will be a spelling week, with the pre-quiz on Thursday.  Those that make a 95 or above on the pre-quiz will not need to take the actual quiz on Friday.

Reading/ Writing:

We’ve finished both Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Rascal this week. We’ll have a test on Rascal March 2. Students received review sheets following our last book chat on Thursday of last week. We have also begun our next read-aloud, The Great Turkey Walk, a humorous tale about a fifteen year-old boy who leads a turkey drive from Missouri to Colorado.

All the lines of the play, Caddie Woodlawn, need to be memorized by Monday. We’ll be working primarily on our play practice as spring break follows this week.

Week of February 22

Our Civil War coverage continues this week with a more detailed look at the skirmishes of the war. Mrs. Brummeler’s class was on track last week and will therefore not have a quiz. Mr. Martinka’s class lost one period due to our wetlands field trip and will therefore have our quiz on Wednesday. Both classes will be introduced to Walt Whitman’s “O Captain, My Captain”, which we will memorize to be presented on March 19, Grandparent’s Day.

March 1 to 5, 2010

We are continuing to read “The Mystery of the Periodic Table” this week. We read through chapter 7 so far, and have learned about the strange history of chemistry. Keep in mind, even in their errors, early chemists discovered many things that were needed for us to know what we know today!

Grammar 5 Latin: Mrs. Spain-Smith

Week of March 15-19

Quiz:  No quiz next week.  We’ll begin working our way through chapter 24 and take a quiz over it next week.

Parents–How To Help Your Latin Wonder: Your student’s Latin book is extremely parent-friendly!  Each chapter includes explanations of the grammar being introduced in “kid language”.  Using these pages to quiz your student about what they are learning is a great way to take studying to the next level.
