This week in the Wonderful World of Kindergarten…
Spelling/Grammar/Language: This week we will be reviewing the single letter phonograms and multi-letter phonograms that we have learned throughout the year. We will also introduce the phonograms ie and dge. We will identify rhyming and non-rhyming words and review the pronunciation, spelling, and markings of the words we have learned thus far. We will practice individual speech sounds and work on correct directionality for writing letters as we continue working on writing the phonograms we have learned. We will write words in our spelling notebooks and we will practice these words throughout the week and review them on Friday. We will continue working on proper nouns and identifying the differences between common and proper nouns. We will place special focus this week with places. We will create oral sentences and pictures to identify common and proper nouns. We will continue discussing informative, narrative, and informative-narrative literature. We will discuss that informative-narrative literature contains many facts and will identify examples of informative-narrative literature that we read throughout the week. We will also be making connections between our prior knowledge and what is stated in the books we read. We will identify the author’s purpose, type of writing, and the elements of the text. Our reading selections this week will include The Story of Ping, Tikki Tikki Tembo, Yeh-Shen (a Chinese Cinderella), Grandfather Tang’s Story, and Little Pear. We will also be reading aloud as a class. I will be sending home small readers for your child to practice reading.
Unit Study: This week we will travel from India to China. We will learn that China is located on the continent of Asia. We will locate the Yangtze River and the Great Wall of China. We will discuss and the clothing, food, culture, flag and language of the Chinese people. We will even create our own Great Wall!
Math: This week we will begin Chapter 9: Money. In Chapter 9, children will recognize the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter; count on by 1s to find the value of a group of coins; trade and compare money amounts; add and subtract money amounts; and solve problems by using a model. Our focus for this week will be on pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, and counting between the intervals. We will spend time learning what makes each coin different from the other. We will even be playing with these coins for hands-on experiences.
Bible: This week we will be reading the stories of “God Chooses David” and “David and Goliath.” Please discuss these stories at home with your child, and let them narrate to you.
Nature Study: This week we will be reviewing butterflies. We will be reviewing the characteristics of insects: 1) invertebrate, 2) exoskeleton, 3) three body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen), 4) six legs, 5) two antennae, and 6) some have 2 wings. We will be learning about the life-cycle of the butterfly, and even learning a song to help us remember.
Show and Tell: This week for Show & Tell, please have your child bring an item that relates to a healthy activity or life choice. For example, if your child plays soccer, they could bring a soccer ball, shin guards, or their jersey. Drawings and photographs are also acceptable. We will be discussing how this activity or life choice helps to keep them healthy.
****Reminder: Friday, March 19th, will be Grandparents Day! Grandparents, and other family, are invited to visit our classroom.
Have a wonderful week!

Music with Mrs. Still
Posted by cstillMARCH IN GRAMMAR OF MUSIC CLASSES
Here are some highlights of our planned studies for the month of March:
- Our composers in focus this month are Frederic Chopin of Poland and Claude Debussy of France. We are focusing on some of their beautiful piano pieces. We will hear Chopin’s “Minute Waltz”, his “Raindrop Prelude”, and several of his preludes, mazurkas, and nocturnes. We will enjoy Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk”, and “Arabesque 1″.
- Our folk songs this month will have a nautical theme – “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”, “Cockles and Muscles”, “Blow the Man Down”, and other songs of the sea. How fitting after our recent “Pirates” musical!
- News by Grade Level: All students in K through 6 will share music and recitations at designated moments throughout the Grandparents Day on Friday, March 19. K-garten will listen to “Carnival of the Animals” over the weeks ahead. Grammar 1 will be learning “Eerie Canal” to tie in with their history studies and will be listening to “Peter and the Wolf”. Grammar 2 will take time in the weeks ahead to learn about Verdi’s opera set in Egypt, “Aida”. G3 will continue to learn about medieval and renaissance music and will continue recorder studies. G4 and G5 will resume recorder studies and will work on music for their Texas and frontier themed plays for Grandparents Day.
