Welcome back!  I hope you all had a relaxing spring break.  We will finish our study of trigonometry this week.  I know you will all be glad to hear that.  We will learn a several more trig identities this week.  These are identities that you do not have to memorize (big sigh of relief); you just need to know how to use them.   We will spend the week practicing using all of these and will plan a test early next week.

Week of March 15-19

On Monday, we will read several general articles about the Black Plague and Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries.  This will begin a new unit that will last for the next couple of weeks.  You will have several questions to answer regarding the articles.  We will read from the Medieval Sourcebook on Tuesday and discuss several eyewitness accounts of the Plague.  You will have several questions that correspond to this reading as well.  On Wednesday, I will lecture about the political, economic and demographic impact of the Plague.  Please recopy the notes and be prepared for a quiz on Friday.  On Thursday, we will watch a History Channel presentation about the Black Death.  During Friday’s class, we will have a short quiz about the lecture and a discussion about yesterday’s presentation.

MARCH 4 FIELD TRIP TO BAYLOR LAW OUTREACH PROGRAM

As a career awareness opportunity, our Rhetoric students will be attending the annual Future Lawyers Outreach Program on March 4, 2010 hosted by Baylor Law School.  The goal of the program is to provide students with an increased understanding of higher education, supplemented by an understanding of the legal process.  Students will leave Live Oak at 9:45 a.m. and return by 1:45.  The program includes a welcome by Assistant Dean of Admissions Becky Beck-Chollett, a mock law class, a luncheon, and closing ceremonies.

CONCERNING COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTS

Become familiar with the ACT test (www.act.org) and the SAT test (www.collegeboard.com).  As Rhetoric 1 students, it is NOT too early to begin to learn everything you can about college admissions tests.  The more familiar you are with their format and questioning, the more comfortable you will feel when you take them.  Also, you can get an idea of what you need to pay particular attention to in your lessons.  Look into both tests and take some practice tests on line.  You may find that you perform better on one over the other.  Most colleges accept either one so it may not be necessary to take both.  Be sure you look on the college’s website, though, to see if your college of choice is among the ones that accepts either.

Week of 3/15-3/19

Welcome back!    This last week was similar to summer break, no?  The same in shape, but not in size.  We are going to continue to explore similarity this week, but in much higher dimensions.  We are going to build our own similarity, get our hands dirty finding similarity in natures, using digital image software to analyze similarity and raising our glasses to similarity (literally)!  I hope your curious, because I sure am.

The next NY Times article elucidates the oft-cited, but under-appreciated sector of mathematics, algebra.  Read on at #5 – The Joy of x
