A Strong Downtown Presence

Live Oak launched the Branching Out campaign in 2008 to purchase and renovate a commercial property (the Motor Shop) across the street from First Baptist Church, to serve as Jr. High and High School Campus (Logic/Rhetoric Campus). Thanks to the sacrificial generosity of Live Oak families paired with an anonymous matching gift and Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds from the city of Waco, the campaign was completed ahead of schedule, providing a separate campus for Jr. High and High School students.

Without an additional fundraising campaign, Live Oak was able to acquire and renovate another downtown property, Waco Spring and Brake, to provide additional academic and athletic space for locker rooms, art classrooms and a lunchroom for the upper schools.

Live Oak’s continued growth demonstrates that the demand for private education is on the rise as families in Waco and across the nation desire more options for their children. Faced with limited space and increasing enrollment, Live Oak has been diligently considering how to address the imminent space-related needs of our school. A variety of options were considered, including looking for other properties away from the center of the city or even outside of town, where new construction might fulfill our needs.

Instead, Live Oak has decided to remain firmly established in the heart of Waco, with our families committed to staying in our current location along the 4th/5th street corridor between downtown and the Baylor campus. A high percentage of our families have strong ties to higher education—Baylor, MCC, and TSTC—and many others work at local hospitals, or own Waco businesses. These families travel in and out of downtown Waco daily for school pick-up and drop-off, and to attend school activities.

This is an exciting and vibrant part of the city, which has benefited greatly from the ongoing revitalization initiatives downtown. The presence of an active Christian school campus only enhances the efforts to draw more people to the area for family-friendly activities like athletic events and fine arts performances. With its close proximity to Magnolia Market, the growth and future vitality of this area is immeasurable.
